[ war is coming, and clarisse needs to assemble the best possible team she can for ridire; the high-king tasked her to organize a team of elite shardbearers, and while things might still be ... awkward (uncomfortable) between her and luke, the one thing she will admit — and always has, even when anger lined her insides and made her seethe every time someone even mentioned him — is the fact that he's the greatest swordsman she's ever seen. he did essentially teach her the way of the sword; she might instinctively know a parry from a thrust, but it was with luke's guidance that she began to make sense of her instincts and hone them into skill. but even with years of training, she's still never been able to handle a sword like he does. maybe that's made her envious, but even envy comes with the admission that there's one thing clarisse la rue isn't a master at (she'd like to think she at least comes a little close; closer than percy, anyway). ]
[ calling luke twice in one month feels ... odd, to say the least, but at least she's calling ahead to double check he's actually available before she wastes her time knocking on the door of an empty room, much like they'd wasted their time in the cothromach because clarisse hadn't just sent a telegram or whatever backwards method of communication the natives here use. she can already see luke rolling his eyes, even though this is an audio call — at least she's prepared, right? ] Hey. [ she starts off a little hesitantly, almost wondering if she should abort this mission entirely and skip to calling annabeth or thalia instead. it would certainly be a lot easier, but it's probably better to get the hard one out of the way first. ] I need to ask you something. I'd actually rather ... do it in person, if you've got time. [ asking him to join her team face-to-face just seems like the best way to go, adds a sense of formality to an otherwise (mostly) informal phone call. ] It's important.
